Justice Sheilah Martin of the Supreme Court of Canada on Tuesday announced she is planning to retire in May after nearly eight years on the top bench.
Her last day is May 30.
“Justice Martin is widely respected for the depth of her legal scholarship, her commitment to fairness, and her principled approach to justice,” said Chief Justice Wagner said in a statement on Tuesday.
She was born and raised in Montreal and, later in her career, Justice Martin served as dean of the University of Calgary law school. She was also a criminal and constitutional litigator. She was appointed to the superior court in Alberta in 2005 and elevated to the province’s Court of Appeal in 2016. The next year she was named to the Supreme Court.
