Good afternoon. It’s Friday, Jan. 9.

In today's newsletter:

  • Pitched as a financial necessity given declining state revenues, a 3% sales tax proposal faces an uphill battle in the Anchorage Assembly before it stands a chance of appearing on the city's April ballot.

  • President Donald Trump lashed out at  Sen. Lisa Murkowski and other Republican senators, saying they should not be reelected after they helped advance a resolution that would constrain his power to use additional military force in Venezuela.

  • Alaska's U.S. Rep. Nick Begich voted against extending health care subsidies for three years, while 17 other Republicans defied their party leadership to help pass the measure in the House.

If these recent bouts of below-zero temperatures in Southcentral Alaska have been keeping you inside, fear not. There are highs in the mid-20s coming this weekend, along with a host of both indoor and outdoor events around Anchorage. From a fat-bike race and an art crawl to a roller derby doubleheader, check out what's happening here.

Anchorage weather

It's mostly cloudy today with a high near 7 degrees, and there's a slight chance of snow later this afternoon. Looking ahead to the weekend, the forecast calls for more snow and daytime high temperatures in the high teens to mid-20s.
