January 1st rolls around and suddenly everyone's Dave Ramsey.
"This is MY year!" "I'm finally getting my money right!" "2025 is when everything changes!"
Cool story.
Where were you on December 28th when you panic-bought a Peloton on credit because it was "on sale"?
Here's the truth about New Year's resolutions: they're garbage.
Not because change is impossible, or because you can't transform your finances.
But because resolutions are based on motivation, and motivation is about as reliable as a 1997 Honda Civic with 300,000 miles on it.
It might get you somewhere.
But it's probably going to break down when you need it most.
What works? HABITS.
You know what the difference is?
A resolution says "I'm going to save $10,000 this year!"
A habit says "Every Friday, I automatically transfer $200 to savings before I can spend it on Door Dash."
One is a fantasy.
The other is a system.
But here's where most people screw up both resolutions AND habits: They start building without a foundation.
build your foundation, Pookie
You can't build a savings habit if you don't know where your money is actually going right now.
You can't stop overspending if you haven't identified what you're overspending ON.
Before you do anything else in 2025, audit your damn finances.
I'm talking about a REAL audit.
Not a vibes-based "I think I spend like $500 on food?" audit.
Here's what you need to do:
Pull up the last 3 months of bank and credit card statements.
Every transaction.
Yes, even the embarrassing ones.
ESPECIALLY the embarrassing ones.
Categorize everything.
How much actually went to rent? Groceries? Subscriptions you forgot existed? That "self-care" you convinced yourself was an investment?
Calculate your REAL spending by category.
Not what you wish you spent. What you ACTUALLY spent. This is where people lie to themselves and wonder why their budget never works.
Identify the leaks. I guarantee you're hemorrhaging money somewhere stupid.
Find it. Name it. Shame it if necessary.
shame works
This audit is the difference between someone who SAYS they want to save money and someone who ACTUALLY DOES IT.
Because once you see where your money is going, you can't unsee it.
And that clarity?
That's what makes habits stick.
You can't fix what you won't face.
So stop scrolling through savings tips and start looking at your actual numbers.
Your 2025 doesn't start with a resolution.
It starts with the truth.
Now get to work.

P.S. If you need a system that does this audit FOR you and tracks your spending automatically, Dollar Wise will literally categorize every transaction and show you where your money is actually going.
