My first apartment in New York was on West 79th Street. There was a great bagel place on the corner of Broadway and 80th, which I routinely visited on Sunday mornings. Incredible bagels. New Yorkers know what I’m talking about: H&H Bagels. They closed in 2011 because of tax evasion issues and other shady stuff. I’m sorry I never took photos of the inside of that 79th street store. It was really bare bones, nothing but bagels, tubs of cream cheese and a cooler for soda and juice. No tables. Sometimes the line was really long, going outside the door, they are so good. I always felt intimidated when I went in, thinking I had to order very fast. This was the way they displayed the bagels— I think this photo below that I found on the internet was taken in that 79th store. Apparently, the maker of the iconic bagels never really fully went out of business, and now there’s one in the new train station, Moynahan Hall. The drawing above was done from a photo I took this morning there! It’s been a holiday tradtion in my family ever since I lived in that neighborhood decades ago to have lox and bagels on Christmas morning. I always try to get H&H Bagels because, well, they are the best. I got a dozen everything.
