After three months and heaven knows how many showers, our beauty experts and a panel of 21 testers with a range of hair lengths, types, and curl patterns crowned six standout shampoos.

Our favorites include a daily stalwart, a volumizing shampoo that delivers impressive fullness, and a luxe wash that transforms your shower into a sensory escape.

Plus: The best conditioners

A great conditioner can moisturize dry strands, make detangling easier, and help prevent damage. We considered over 80 contenders before narrowing it down to 15 for our panel to test. Of those, five rose to the top, including a hydrating under-$10 standout, a great formula for tight curls and coils, and a buttery balm that gives dry, frayed lengths a glossy sheen.

If you want to look like you just stepped out of a salon, head to the drugstore. We’re not saying everything at your local CVS or Walmart is great (side-eye to you, Prell shampoo), but there are plenty of gems if you know what to look for.

One last (hair) thing: Do you actually need to shampoo twice?

The answer certainly isn’t universal, but in some cases, there is a real benefit to shampooing twice — and it can make a “noticeable difference” in how clean your hair feels. If you have oily roots, for instance, or you use a lot of hair products, you might be a good candidate for a rinse and repeat.
