If you’ve been practicing Functional Medicine for any length of time, you’ve likely seen a pattern that can be both confusing and frustrating:

 

  • You do excellent FM 1.0 work.
  • The patient improves.
  • Then progress stalls… or symptoms flare… or tolerance collapses.
  • This doesn’t mean FM 1.0 was wrong.
     

It means modern chronic illness has changed—and the physiology driving today’s patients often operates at a deeper regulatory layer than the original model was designed to address.
