Trump threatens 5% tariff on Mexico amid water dispute
President Donald Trump has said that Mexico would face a 5% tariff if it fails to meet its water delivery obligations under a 1944 treaty. Mexico owes the US 800,000 acre-feet of water due to violations during the past five years, the president has said, and warned that the tariff would be enacted if Mexico does not release 200,000 acre-feet before Dec. 31.

Efforts to clean Tijuana River pollution intensify

The Tijuana River remains a major pollution source in southern San Diego County, flooding neighborhoods with untreated wastewater and industrial chemicals from Tijuana. Despite upgrades to wastewater treatment facilities on both sides of the border, the river continues to release contaminants into the environment, leading to beach closures and persistent health risks for residents. County Supervisor Paloma Aguirre is calling for funding to address a major pollution hotspot and for new infrastructure to clean up the river on the US side.

Ohio alliance warns of wetland risk under WOTUS proposal
Cincinnati, Ohio, wetlands could be at risk under an Environmental Protection Agency proposal to revise the definition of "waters of the United States" to include only wetlands that are adjacent to protected waters, according to the Mill Creek Alliance. The change could lead to the loss of valuable wetland areas that help control flooding and filter water, undermining conservation efforts in the region, it says.

220M people may lack access to clean water by 2050

Up to 220 million people could lose access to clean, piped water by 2050 if urban growth continues in a sprawling, horizontal pattern, according to a study by the Complexity Science Hub and the World Bank. The study analyzed more than 100 cities in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and determined that sprawling cities already see water bills about 75% higher than their more compact counterparts. It highlights the importance of urban design decisions in future water access.

Fla. county wraps up landmark water reclamation project
Sarasota County has completed the largest membrane bioreactor installation in Florida at the Bee Ridge Water Reclamation Facility, finalizing a five-year project that marks the county's most significant capital improvement to date. The upgrade included maintaining plant operations throughout construction and repurposing existing infrastructure to process 18 million gallons per day, up from 12 million.
