Developers have nixed nearly 2,000 power projects in the US this year, representing 266 gigawatts of capacity, reports Cleanview. Most of the cancellations involve clean energy, including 86 GW of solar, 79 GW of energy storage and 54 GW of wind. It attributed the trend to changes in PJM Interconnection's market, policy headwinds and structural challenges. Local opposition is also on the rise, with Cleanview's Michael Thomas noting the sentiment is driving cancellations in growing data center hubs.

Battery prices are expected to decrease by 3% next year to $105 per kilowatt-hour, driven by increased manufacturing capacity in China, competition and a shift to lithium-iron phosphate technology, according to a survey from BloombergNEF. This drop follows an 8% decrease this year despite rising raw material costs. "This is an important moment for the industry, as record-low battery prices create an opportunity to lower EV costs and accelerate the deployment of grid-scale storage to support renewables integration around the world," says BNEF's Evelina Stoikou.

The initiative involves drilling deep wells to access heat from 2 miles underground, a challenging task in upstate New York's rocky geology. Unlike typical geothermal projects, Earth Source Heat focuses solely on heating, rather than generating electricity. "We can't decarbonize without solving the heat problem," says project manager Wayne Bezner Kerr.
