Good morning,

This week, when it was reported that France’s president had warned other European leaders that Washington might soon betray Ukraine, I was reminded of Celeste Wallander’s forceful essay from this summer: “Beware the Europe You Wish For.” European officials, she noted, are growing wary of the United States, losing confidence that sticking close to an increasingly unreliable Washington “will secure their interests,” and are now pursuing more independence. As U.S.-European tensions continue to bubble up, read Wallander on the danger of the allies drifting further apart—and what the United States stands to lose if it cannot “slow Europe’s flight from Washington.”

Until next week,
