Kicking off

On the list of items that could potentially derail the AFC front-running Patriots, injury is up near the top.

Mike Vrabel's team has had pretty good fortune in that area, but did suffer a significant blow during Thursday night's win over the Jets.

Defensive tackle Milton Williams suffered a high ankle sprain. It was bad enough that he was placed on IR.

So the $104 million dollar man, who has been a force up front, is out for the next four games. That means the Patriots will be without one of their best defensive players in two upcoming AFC tilts against Buffalo and Baltimore, games that figure to be pivotal in the overall playoff picture.

They're also going to miss him in their Week 13 Monday night tilt with the New York Giants, along with Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

With Joe Burrow possibly returning for the Bengals, that will sting, but in the short term, the Patriots should be able to survive. It's more important having Williams healthy and available for the postseason.

This is one position the Patriots actually have some depth. Christian Barmore won't have his sidekick, but Khyiris Tonga will still be alongside. He's has been terrific as the third member of that front. He's one of the Patriots biggest free agent steals.

Cory Durden has also played well as a role player since being added in August after roster cuts. No doubt rookies Joshua Farmer and Eric Gregory will be asked to help pick up some of the slack.

Also expect Jeremiah Pharms, who has performed well in the past, to be elevated from the practice squad.

With the bye coming Week 14, Williams will have at least five weeks to get the ankle right.

So while it's not great news, the Patriots have reserves in place to weather the storm.

Sports reporter Lauren Campbell returns for Week 12:

The Patriots have won eight games in a row as they prepare for Week 12 against the three-win Cincinnati Bengals.

Not only will Cincinnati likely continue to be without quarterback Joe Burrow — who was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice — as he rehabs from toe surgery, the Bengals will also be without their star wide receiver.

Ja’Marr Chase was suspended for one game after he spit on Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey and had his appeal denied.

The Patriots, meanwhile, are firing on all cylinders and could get healthier come Sunday. Rhamondre Stevenson (toe) has missed the last three games, while Kayshon Boutte (hamstring) has been sidelined for the last two games. Both players could return in Week 12.

Even if Stevenson can’t go, TreVeyon Henderson has emerged as a legitimate threat on offense. The rookie running back had three touchdowns against the New York Jets in Week 11.

Couple that with Drake Maye, who’s been playing himself into the MVP conversation this year, at quarterback and the Browns have a tall task in front of them that only will be harder without Chase in the lineup.

The Patriots are also undefeated on the road.

Final score prediction: Patriots 42, Bengals 15

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

What AFC team scares you the most for the Patriots in the postseason? -  Brian from Stoughton

Guregian: Patrick Mahomes always scares me. But the Chiefs are currently on the outside looking in. Josh Allen is another that's high up in the scare department.

But, the Bills lost Thursday night in Houston, and could potentially be three games behind the Patriots if the locals take care of businesss in Cincinnati.

So, right now, sitting at Week 12, I'm going with Denver.

That defense is frightening, much like what the Texans showed against the Bills Thursday night. They're allowing the third-fewest points per game (17.5). They're also the stingiest defense in the red zone, and on third down.

Add in the possibility of having to play the Broncos at Mile High if they capture the top seed, and they're going to be tough to beat.

Say what you will about Bo Nix, but he's been money with the game on the line. While the offense as a whole has been a bit anemic, he's delivered with the game on the line.

Head coach Sean Payton also knows how to win the big games. It says something that the Broncos have already beaten the two teams (KC, Philadelphia) in the Super Bowl last season.
