Kicking off
On the list of items that could potentially derail the AFC front-running Patriots, injury is up near the top.
Mike Vrabel's team has had pretty good fortune in that area, but did suffer a significant blow during Thursday night's win over the Jets.
Defensive tackle Milton Williams suffered a high ankle sprain. It was bad enough that he was placed on IR.
So the $104 million dollar man, who has been a force up front, is out for the next four games. That means the Patriots will be without one of their best defensive players in two upcoming AFC tilts against Buffalo and Baltimore, games that figure to be pivotal in the overall playoff picture.
They're also going to miss him in their Week 13 Monday night tilt with the New York Giants, along with Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
With Joe Burrow possibly returning for the Bengals, that will sting, but in the short term, the Patriots should be able to survive. It's more important having Williams healthy and available for the postseason.
This is one position the Patriots actually have some depth. Christian Barmore won't have his sidekick, but Khyiris Tonga will still be alongside. He's has been terrific as the third member of that front. He's one of the Patriots biggest free agent steals.
Cory Durden has also played well as a role player since being added in August after roster cuts. No doubt rookies Joshua Farmer and Eric Gregory will be asked to help pick up some of the slack.
Also expect Jeremiah Pharms, who has performed well in the past, to be elevated from the practice squad.
With the bye coming Week 14, Williams will have at least five weeks to get the ankle right.
So while it's not great news, the Patriots have reserves in place to weather the storm.
