The number of pedestrian deaths this year has now risen to the same level as last year, when a total of 15 people died, which appears to be the most pedestrian deaths in Anchorage over a year’s time since at least 1988. The high tally has sparked calls for action, especially on state-owned arterial roads where most fatal crashes occur.

The two schools had been slated for closure as part of a proposal to “right-size” the district by shrinking the number of school buildings it operates, which district officials said would more efficiently serve a steadily declining number of students.
