Laos methanol poisonings: Bethany Clarke and Simone White were inseparable. "We were just always in communication. Never hello or goodbye," Bethany tells the ABC. But what was supposed to be a fun trip together in Laos turned to tragedy after they and at least nine others were poisoned with methanol, allegedly at the same hostel.
'Turning grief into action': Simone's family made the heartbreaking decision to turn off her life support. For Bethany, her life would never be the same. As the one-year anniversary approaches
, she tells the ABC she and other victims of the Vang Vieng mass poisoning are channelling their grief into raising awareness of the issue, which is common throughout the region.
'Nothing has happened': Meanwhile, the Vang Vieng backpacker venue implicated in the poisoning is set to reopen. Six people died and at least five others were poisoned by methanol in the town, but no-one has been formally charged over the incident. Local businesses appear determined to put the tragedy in the rear-view mirror.
