Good afternoon. It’s Wednesday, Nov. 5.

In today's newsletter:

  • If passed, a new Anchorage ordinance would impose potentially hefty fines on property owners who install “no trespassing” signs and barriers that may impede access to the city’s public lands, parks and trails.

  • The number of commercial fishing jobs in Alaska plunged to a new low last year as the industry struggles with disrupted fisheries, low prices, climate change and other factors, a state report has found.

  • Heavy snow is forecast for Turnagain Pass tomorrow, making for potentially challenging driving conditions through the Seward Highway corridor on the northern Kenai Peninsula.

A glacier in Antarctica retreated five miles in two months. That's 10 times faster than the previous record. The rapid disappearance of the Hektoria Glacier has possible implications for the stability of other glaciers and the pace of sea-level rise on a warming planet, researchers say.

Anchorage weather

It's mostly cloudy today with a high around 33 degrees. We should expect snow on Thursday, followed by partly sunny skies on Friday and more precipitation on Saturday. Daytime highs will remain in the low to mid-30s for the next few days.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
