Good afternoon. It’s Tuesday, Nov. 4.

In today's newsletter:

  • A group of faculty unions at the University of Alaska are petitioning the UA Board of Regents not to sign on to President Donald Trump’s “Compact for Excellence in Higher Education.”

  • The regional Alaska air carrier Kenai Aviation shut down operations abruptly on Monday, citing financial insolvency.

  • A new center has opened in Anchorage to provide disaster recovery services to Western Alaska residents displaced by ex-Typhoon Halong, state officials said.

Visitors have long used unique postcards to memorialize their travels to the 49th state, remarking on everything from dogs to the weather and the size of mosquitoes. Here's a sampling of what tourists and newcomers thought about Alaska through the decades.

Anchorage weather

It's partly sunny with a high around 38 degrees, but the forecast calls for a 50% chance of scattered rain and snow showers. We should see mostly sunny skies on Wednesday, while a chance of precipitation returns on Thursday. Daytime highs will hover in the mid-30s for the next few days.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
