Supermoon, driverless cars, and a glorious Christmas tree

Good morning, Insiders!

Today is a busy day in the state of Michigan. We've got elections. The NFL trade deadline. A supermoon. And Ashlee Baracy keeps saying "snow" in this weekend's weather forecast.

I'm very much Team Warm Weather, but she gave us a beautiful evening for trick-or-treating, so I'll let it slide.

Here's a look at some of those stories, and the other top headlines we're following on ClickOnDetroit this morning.

Election Day

The polls opened at 7 a.m. and are open until 8 p.m. If you haven't registered to vote yet, you can still do so at your city or township clerk’s office.

Not sure which races to keep an eye on? We've got a list of the key races right here.

Driverless cars coming to Detroit

Waymo, the fully autonomous ride-hailing service, is coming to Detroit, but those cars won't be driverless at first.

The cars will be mapping out the city with drivers as early as this week so they can get the lay of the land.

Waymo hopes the fully autonomous version of the service will be up and running by next year.

But how will these driverless cars handle situations like a "Michigan left" or heavy snowfall? We asked some of those questions yesterday and got the answers.

Our tree is on the way!

If you haven't already heard, Local 4 is now your home for the Detroit Tree Lighting. So of course, we had to make our way up north for the harvesting of this year's Christmas tree!

Local 4 cameras were in Mesick, Michigan, when this year's 62-foot Norway Spruce came down and began its journey to Campus Martius.

It's a 200-mile journey to Downtown Detroit, but the tree is expected to arrive by Wednesday.

Credit card 'ghost tapping'

Remember when we used to have to swipe our credit cards using the strip on the back? Then there was the brief "insert" period using the chip on the top.

Now, most of the time, we only have to place our card up to the reader to make a payment. Well, thieves are trying to take advantage of that quick and convenient exchange.

It's called "ghost tapping," and it includes using Flipper devices that act like remote controls for garage doors, control electronics, and test security systems.

Be careful when making payments in crowded areas, and the BBB recommends avoiding tap-to-pay when possible.

Just what everyone needed: Another mundane task turns into something to worry about!

Snow and a supermoon

Is it going to snow this weekend? Believe it or not, there's a chance!

Ashlee Baracy is expecting a nice Election Day, and temperatures even rise into the 60s during this week.

But long-range models show a chance for snow to mix in with rain on Sunday. It's still several days out, but it looks like temperatures could drop low enough for the first few snowflakes of the season.

On the bright side (literally), you might get a look at the biggest and brightest supermoon of the year! The best viewing times are expected to be Tuesday evening and just after sunset on Wednesday.

Stay warm, protect your credit card, and thank you for being an Insider. Have a great day!
