For my first four years of editing videos, I had a backlog of clients and was working my butt off my get their videos done. If I had any free time, I was editing. And if you asked me how it was going, I would tell you I was editing as fast as I could. But was I really? No. Because I had never taken the time to get the right mindset for editing. Tell me if you’ve heard this before: “Perfection is the enemy of progress.” My mindset those first four years of editing was a mindset of perfection. I wanted my videos to be perfect edits, with perfect cuts and perfect transitions that fit the video perfectly. I was agonizing over every clip that I chose, making sure that it was the absolute best shot to use at the time. And this mindset of editing perfection was taking me SO. MUCH. TIME. So what changed? I recognized I had a pattern of picking a clip to use in my video, then stressing about whether it was the perfect clip and trying multiple other clips before finally, (minutes later) going back to the original clip that I chose. In fact, 90% of the time the first clip that I chose was the clip that I ended up using, even if I tried out dozens of other clips afterwards. My subconscious knew what clip I should use, but it took my conscious mind a few minutes to catch up. So how can this help you? Remember first of all that perfection is the enemy of progress. You do not need a video to be perfect, especially when you are picking clips to use in it for the first time. Instead, if you want to progress in faster video editing, I want you to choose the first clip that you think might work in your video. Then choose the next. Trust that your subconscious mind knows best! Don’t stress about fine-tuning things, just throw your clips onto the timeline as fast as you can. It's more important that you get footage on your timeline than it is that the footage be perfect! What’s amazing, is you’ll watch your video back and suddenly realize it looks good! It won’t be perfect, but remember you aren’t looking for perfection right now, you want to harness the power of your subconscious being right 90% of the time. You will be amazed at how much faster you can edit! I now sit down to edit a video and take 1/4 the time or less than I used to, and with this technique I'm betting you can too!
