Good morning. It's Tuesday. Thomas Morgan here with your AM NewsMail.
Today, as some of Australia's most populated areas face higher insurance premiums due to worsening disasters, the climate battle is continuing within the Coalition. After the Nationals' dumping of net zero, Sussan Ley is now under intense pressure to land on a position within a divided Liberal Party.
Plus, the rise of Zohran Mamdani as New Yorkers head to the polls, why a leaked video sparked a political fight in Israel, and an update from our PNG correspondent on conjoined twins Tom and Sawong.

Here's what you need to know about today
|
What's the story: The Coalition is due to meet for a joint party room session, after the Nationals' weekend decision to dump its net zero by 2050 target. Liberals are still digesting the change, but some within the party are privately angered by the junior coalition partner's decision.
Opposition Leader Sussan Ley is under intense pressure to land a position that can keep the party together without losing ground in city seats at the next election. "[They should] stop revolving around the mulberry tree," one anonymous Nationals MP says of the Liberals.
Cost of our climate: Meanwhile, our business team has filed on how worsening disasters are impacting your back pocket. Insurer IAG is warning Australians to brace for rising home premiums due in part to increasingly frequent and damaging weather events.
News analysis: Could the federal government's new environment reforms help or hinder nature? It depends on the minister
, writes environment reporter Peter de Kruijff.

The latest ABC exclusives, investigations and insights
|
- NYC mayoral race: Something big could be about to happen in the Big Apple. Tomorrow, voters in America's largest city could elect their first Muslim mayor — an avowed democratic socialist. 7.30 takes to the streets in New York to find out why Zohran Mamdani is making an impact, and what it could mean for US politics.
- 'Treason': The arrest of an Israeli military lawyer is once again shining light on the shocking abuse of Palestinians in detention. But rather than condemning the alleged abuse, some right-wing Israeli politicians are instead
condemning the crime of leaking footage of the shocking incident.
- Housing crisis: Even in some of Australia's smallest communities, demand for housing is rapidly outpacing supply. Our Tasmanian reporters today take us to the state's Break O'Day municipality, where population growth is putting the strain on people like Haylee Semmens.
- 'Might all end in tears': As property prices surge, Michele Bullock would be
relieved she's keeping interest rates on hold, writes chief business correspondent Ian Verrender. Booming global stocks and plenty of money sloshing around financial markets are some of the big reasons why.

Here are the other stories making headlines

- 'Frequent flyer program' for IVF: That's how a new reward program earmarked for Australia is being described by concerned industry insiders. The ABC has seen emails from an international egg bank about its new "Client Success Reward Program in Australia", which the company says has not been implemented.
- UK train attack: Authorities are investigating whether three other knife-related incidents in the city of Peterborough are connected to a man charged over the mass stabbing. Anthony Williams appeared in court
charged with multiple offences including attempted murder, after Saturday's attack and a second incident in London.
- Mouse warning: After reaching plague proportions in 2020 and 2021, farmers are again being warned that populations of the introduced pest are on the rise once more. In the firing line — Australia's key cropping zones.

Quote of the day

| "If the twins pass on in a hospital with best neonatal care equipment and manpower, we can say that we tried our best. If the twins pass on in Port Moresby General Hospital, where there is only basic equipment, we did not try our best."

That's pilot Jurgen Ruh, who is advocating for two babies born conjoined in Papua New Guinea to be airlifted abroad for better medical assistance.
Our PNG correspondent Marian Faa has filed an update on the case of Tom and Sawong, born last month conjoined at the lower abdomen, as Port Moresby doctors warn against moving the twins.
