The Weekender: Jeremy Allen White’s anxiety, long walks vs. short walks and Costa Rica for less
Plus, 23 exciting new books coming in November

Welcome back to The Weekender, where you’ll find a batch of the week’s top stories about culture and the way we live today.

When my colleague Dani Blum told me she was burned by her shower, I could hardly believe it. She’d suffered second-degree burns that would take at least a year to recover from after scalding water exploded on her. This week, Dani wrote about her injury, revealing a part of the experience she hadn’t initially shared. In the aftermath, she had to wear adult diapers, not to relieve herself, but to protect her wounds. Still, Dani writes, at first they were a “horrific indignity,” but now she misses them. Her essay about the surprising lesson this “regression” taught her is below.

We also have advice for anyone trying to stick to a budget (that’s everyone, right?), including how to paint your own furniture, make affordable family dinners everyone will eat and the cheapskate’s guide to Costa Rica. I’m off to look up flights.

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

After an injury, she had to wear adult diapers. Now, this 28-year-old kind of misses them.
