NPR’s 2025 College Podcast Challenge is open now through Fri, Jan. 16. Students can submit a podcast (or multiple podcasts !) on any topic they’re interested in for a chance to share their story on NPR and take home the $5,000 cash prize.
Whether you’re a seasoned student journalist or a first-time podcaster, everyone has a fair shot on winning. As long as you follow these rules:
Students pursuing a bachelor's or associate degree are eligible to participate. Students who graduated earlier in 2025 can also enter.
Your podcast must be between three and 12 minutes in length.
You can’t use copyrighted music or audio, and please keep track of any copyright-free audio you’re using in your entry.
I LOVE our college contest! As a journalist, I’m inspired each year by the work and heart students put into their entries, and I can’t wait to experience it all over again.
🎧 If reading this leaves you feeling inspired to pick up a microphone (or pass the mic to the students in your life!) check out our Sound Advice resources page for getting started in podcasting. ANYONE can make a podcast, and I mean it when I say that!
🎤 And a cool opportunity from our friends at PBS News Student Reporting Labs. They are accepting applications for the co-hosts and producers of On Our Mind, an award-winning student podcast from PBS. I’m excited about this new season that will be an “audio roadtrip,” where students share what makes teen life unique across different parts of the country. Apply here by Oct. 31 to work with their wonderful team, AND get paid a $1,500 stipend! 😉
Thanks again for reading! As always, you can reach my team at studentpodcastchallenge@npr.org with any questions, concerns or feedback.
Until next time,
