Kicking off

The AFC-East leading Patriots.

Who would have thought that would be an apt description for Mike Vrabel's team six weeks into the 2025 season?

Answer: No one.

But their three-game win streak, coupled with the Bills two-game losing streak, has the Patriots sitting atop the AFC East with a 4-2 record, and lead by virtue of the tie-breaker (head-to-head competition) over Buffalo.

"We've put ourselves in a position to play meaningful games," Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said.

How about having Drake Maye as an MVP candidate in Year 2?

Who would have thought that would apply in October?

Answer: No one.

The Patriots quarterback just keeps setting new bars. He keeps raising the bar on his potential, and where it will eventually lead.

Right now, he's risen to the point of being able to elevate his team to gain wins. That ability was in evidence in Buffalo, and in New Orleans.

What does Maye see as the difference between what he was Year 1, to where he is now?

"Just another year of playing football in this league is the biggest thing. More experiences of making throws, studying opponents, studying different defenses. The guys around us," Maye said Wednesday. "We've got new guys, new players that help make my job easier. The guys up front have been playing their butts off. The guys in the pass game, we've got a lot of different guys that can make plays and can hurt the defense, so that keeps them on us. That's the biggest thing is just more experience for myself, and then the guys around me, they've been great."

The Patriots have a favorable schedule the rest of the way. It's not outlandish to believe they'll be a playoff team.

But let's not put the cart before the horse. The Titans are up next, with Vrabel going back to Tennessee for the first time since being fired there two years ago.

Vrabel & the players have been downplaying the significance of the game all week. But Vrabel's backstory is there, quietly lighting a fire.

It's the third road game in as many weeks. And another winnable game.

The players feel if they ignore the noise and the "hype train" as Maye called it, currently surrounding the team, they'll be fine.

Time will tell.

Sports columnist Matt Vautour returns for Week 7:

Keep in mind, I blew it in Week 1 when I picked the Patriots to beat the Raiders. I thought New England would be better and that Vegas would stink. Both of those things turned out to be true eventually. But in Week 1, not so much.

But I’m getting back on the horse. How’s this for a conspiracy theory as I try to redeem myself?

Teams that fire their coach during the season are usually better in the first week after the change. The shock to the system often will spur them to an unsustainable surge of improvement.

It doesn’t always work. Last year, the Bears booted Matt Eberflus after losing on Thanksgiving and still got the stuffing beat out of them the following week by 49ers.

But the Saints, who’d lost seven straight games, pink-slipped Dennis Allen and then beat the Falcons.

According to ESPN, since 2020, teams that dismiss their coach midseason are 10-4 (the record has been updated since ESPN’s story ran on Oct. 14, 2024) against the spread in the first game with an interim head coach.

Is it possible that the Titans considered this when determining when to turf Brian Callahan?

That’s a move only dopey ownership would make, but that’s not out of the question in Nashville.

By firing Brian Callahan this week, they accomplished a couple of things. Instead of a week where local talk radio and columnist etc. are talking only about the return of ex-Titans coach Mike Vrabel, who they never should have fired to begin with, everyone’s attention is split between sacking Callahan, the next coach they might hire, and Vrabel.

Plus, if the short-term interim coach bump shows up here, the Titans could avoid being embarrassed by Vrabel. I think the Titans will get the mini-bump from their coaching shakeup and will cover the 7-point spread, but the Patriots will win outright.

The Pick: Patriots 28, Titans 24.

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Do you think the Patriots will be a playoff team? -  James J. from Waltham

Guregian: If they take care of business, there's no reason to think they won't be in the tournament.

Only three (Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Buffalo) of their remaining 11 opponents have winning records.

It's a stretch to believe the Patriots will beat all the teams with losing records, but it's shaping up for them to have a 10 or 11 win season. That should do the trick either for a wild card spot, or to beat at the Bills, and claim the AFC East division title.

The Bills have a great quarterback, but they're not world beaters by any stretch, even with Josh Allen.

At the very least, the Patriots have put themselves in position to be a playoff team and as Mike Vrabel said, play meaningful games down the road.
