Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
I am writing to inform you of the upcoming schedule for the continued introduction of metal detectors at our school, a measure being implemented to enhance the safety and security of all students and staff.
Practice and Go-Live Dates
To ensure a smooth transition and minimize disruption to the school day, we will first hold a practice session for all students:
-
Practice Day: Tuesday, October 14th
- The metal detectors will be in place for practice only. This is an opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with the procedure (e.g., what items must be handed to adults before walking through the scanners) under the guidance of staff.
-
Official Start: Thursday, October 16th
- The metal detectors will be fully operational, and the new protocol will start this day.
Student Preparation
Students have been receiving instruction and practicing the proper procedure during their Health and Physical Education classes. We ask for your partnership in reminding your child about the importance of preparing before they get to the detector line. Key things for them to remember include:
- Knowing which items to remove from their backpacks (e.g., laptops, umbrellas, and over the ear headphones).
- Having these items ready to be handed to adults before students pass through the detectors.
Our school staff will be posted at the detectors to assist students, provide directions, and ensure an orderly and efficient process.
We appreciate your support as we implement this important safety measure. A well-prepared student will help keep the lines moving quickly and ensure a smooth start to the school day for everyone.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school administration.
Thank you,
Serena Giron
Principal
We’re excited to share that our school will be offering lunch and a snack at no cost to children aged 18 and under on Monday, October 13. As a reminder, all FCPS schools will be closed for students and school staff on October 13 in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Here’s what you need to know:
- Lunch and a snack will be served together from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Meals must be eaten on site at participating schools.
- Enrichment activities will be available for children. Participation is encouraged but not required.
- Only children 18 and under may receive meals.
- Each child may receive one lunch and one snack.
We are proud to support our students’ health and well-being, even on days when school is not in session. We hope that many of our families will take advantage of this opportunity. If you have questions, please contact the Office of Food and Nutrition Services at 703-813-4800.
If you or your student plans to come, please take the time to discuss the relevant information below:
● No backpacks or other bags will be allowed in the stadium. (Students and Adults)
● No outside food or drinks are allowed. The concession stand will be open.
● Students must plan to have their rides waiting for them at 9:30 pm.
● The purpose for attending our football games is to watch the game, cheerleaders, band and dance team.
● We cheer for Annandale and not against our opponent. All cheers should be positive.
● Students planning to attend a game need to leave campus upon school dismissal and return to cheer on the Atoms.
● The gates to the stadium will open at 6:00 pm.
● All students must pre-arrange for transportation and plan to leave immediately after the game.
● Students are expected to be in the stands and not hanging out by the concession stand, bathrooms or other areas; all elementary-aged children must always be supervised by an adult. ● The stadium is now marked with RED and BLACK fence topping. Any section marked in RED means you are NOT allowed to stand in that area. This is to help keep our athletes safe and the walkways in front of the bleachers clear.
● Anyone who leaves may not re-enter, even with a ticket stub or pass.
● Whistles and similar noisemakers are prohibited.
All elementary and middle school students must have a paying parent/guardian to enter and have to be supervised by said parent/guardian throughout the event. Any elementary or middle school student in violation of this policy will have parents called immediately and are subject to being excluded from future extracurricular events and ticket money will not be refunded.
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) invites all 5th–8th grade students to participate in their 13th Annual Invitational Science Fair this coming April 2026!
Participation is completely free, and students will have the opportunity to conduct a research project of their choice and present it in person at the fair.
To support students, TJ’s Investigative Science Outreach team will offer multiple preparation sessions covering topics such as:
