On this frigid Friday morning, we're tracking a developing nor'easter that will impact us this weekend. We're also following other top news stories, including uproar in the Haverhill Police Department, and where the Savannah Bananas will be playing next year. The police chief in Haverhill, Massachusetts, has resigned, Mayor Melinda Barrett announced Thursday, hours after a union representing members of his department announced a no-confidence vote in leadership.

Barrett said she was hiring an outside investigator to examine concerns the Haverhill Police Patrolman’s Association had raised and how the department operates.

“The results of the investigation will determine what, if any, new or permanent actions will need to be taken to ensure the continued safety and wellbeing of the officers and the public,” she said in the statement.

The Savannah Bananas are coming to Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The baseball team — or, more precisely, the “Banana Ball” team — will play two games at Gillette Stadium on Aug. 28 and 29 as part of their 2026 World Tour.

The Bananas announced Thursday that they would be joined by new teams in the new Banana Ball Championship League.

A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas for the Gaza Strip came into effect at noon local time, the Israeli military said Friday, adding that troops were withdrawing to agreed-upon deployment lines.

The announcement came hours after Israel’s Cabinet approved President Donald Trump’s plan for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of the remaining hostages and of Palestinian prisoners.

Palestinians reported heavy shelling in parts of Gaza throughout Friday morning.

Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Mike Greenwell, who played his entire Major League Baseball career with the Sox, has died.

Greenwell was a commissioner of the government of Lee County, Florida, which announced his death Thursday.

“He was a strong advocate for the people and businesses of Lee County and will be remembered for seeking meaningful solutions to the challenges his community faced,” the post said.

Former Boston Celtic and NBA Hall of Famer Paul Pierce was arrested late Tuesday on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI in Los Angeles, the California Highway Patrol said Thursday.

Pierce, a 10-time NBA All-Star during his 19-year career, was found asleep behind the wheel of his SUV at 10:30 p.m. on the 101 Freeway after officers responded to a multi-vehicle crash on the northbound side of the road in the San Fernando Valley, the CHP said in a news release. Lanes were closed for the crash investigation.

As lanes reopened, CHP officers saw a Range Rover stopped in traffic lanes south of the crash scene near Lankershim Boulevard in North Hollywood, the agency said.
