If you ask Devin McCourty about Patriots rookie safety Craig Woodson, clear your schedule for the foreseeable future.
The former Pro Bowl defensive back, who set the standard for safety play in Foxborough for a decade, likes what he’s seen of Woodson, 24, a fourth-round pick out of Cal. For McCourty, it boils down to two specific things: consistency and trust.
“I think he’s been very consistent,” McCourty said in an email exchange. “The splash plays haven’t shown up much yet. Usually when a rookie is playing that many plays, we talk about them making some really good plays and some really bad plays. I think the splash plays are going to come soon, because the more you’re out there as a young guy, it slows down and the playmaking starts."
