Principals' Message

Hello White Oaks Community,

It was another short, yet highly productive week here at White Oaks! We are excited for a full, uninterrupted week ahead to dive deeper into our learning.

Benchmark Language Arts Unit 2 is wrapping up!

Over the last several weeks, our students have been exploring the core concepts of character—both the characters they encounter in stories and their own personal sense of self and integrity. They’ve been reading, writing, and having great discussions about what motivates people and how actions shape identity.

Connect with Learning at Home:

Help reinforce these concepts with your child using these fun questions and hands-on activities:

  • Question: How does the way you act change the way you think about yourself?

  • Activity: Draw a new cover for one of your child's favorite books, featuring the main character during a key moment in the story.

Unit Resources Coming Home:

Keep an eye out! Your child will be bringing home their Unit Magazine at the end of the unit. This magazine is a fantastic resource that includes:

  • An activity calendar with fun, grade-level-specific ways to build on unit concepts.

  • Information on how to best support your child’s reading at home.

You can also find additional family resources on the Benchmark Families website

Comprehensive Boundary Review Update:

FCPS will begin holding October community boundary review meetings on Monday, October 13. The new draft map, Scenario 4, will be shared with the community for feedback at those meetings. It will also be uploaded to the Boundary Explorer Tool shortly before October 13. Community members will then be able to provide feedback in the tool at their convenience.

As a reminder, the community provided feedback on draft scenarios 1-3 in the spring. Scenario 4 continues to build upon the first three scenarios. It is informed by the Superintendent's Boundary Review Advisory Committee, which reviewed community feedback received in the spring to help develop priorities that the consultant used to create Scenario 4.

Visit FCPS’ Comprehensive Boundary Review webpage for more information.

Have a POSITIVE weekend!

Get2Green Share Table

The Get2Green team will be starting a share table program in the cafeteria on Monday.  Approximately 30-40% of food ends up as food waste. In an effort to divert that, we are hoping to decrease trash and support families with food insecurity by beginning the share table.  At the end of the breakfast or lunch period, students will be able (not required) to donate any unopened food. The food will go to support students and families that have a need.  Examples of foods that can be donated are milk, juice boxes, unopened yogurts and cheese sticks, store packaged snacks, packaged cereals, and whole fruits (bananas/oranges/apples).  We cannot accept any foods in ziploc bags.  If your family is experiencing food insecurity, and would like assistance, please reach out to our Family liaison, Analia Puig  (apuig@fcps.edu | 703-923-1452).
