Assault Arrest

CITY OF FAIRFAX — On September 19, 2025, the City of Fairfax Police Department was alerted by Fairfax County Public Schools to an assault that occurred at Providence Elementary School on September 18. The assault involved a Fairfax County Public School instructional assistant and a student. The investigation revealed that during physical education class, the instructional assistant aggressively handled the student for not following directions. No injuries were reported. A teacher who witnessed the incident reported it to the school administration, and the instructional assistant was placed on administrative leave.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division identified the suspect and obtained a warrant.

On October 3, 2025, Matthew Barber, 43, of Fairfax, was issued a summons for misdemeanor Assault (18.2-57) and was released on his promise to appear in court.
