Good afternoon, Lorton Station families!

This week, we are excited to announce that on Thursday, October 9th, we will be a part of the Arm and Hammer ROCKET DAY Challenge! All classes in grades 3-6 will spend time in their STEAM class designing, building, and preparing their rockets for launch next week. We will record all the launches and have them posted on our website and Instagram accounts for our community to watch again and again.

Lorton Station has launched our SHOW UP AND SHINE Attendance Challenge with a special emphasis on our Attendance Spirit Week. Strong attendance is vital to the academic and emotional well-being of every student in school. When a child misses 10% or more of school per year, it significantly impacts their ability to develop as readers, acquire critical thinking skills, become writers, and understand complex math concepts. We want to partner with our families to join our SHOW UP AND SHINE Challenge to ensure your child maintains a 90% or higher attendance every month.

Attendance is a vital life skill that will benefit your child later in life. It’s a good habit to build now to help them graduate from college on time and routinely report to work on time once they have a career.

Please review the FCPS Calendar. Try to schedule any trips or family events on weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students who are absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered “chronically absent.”

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or appointment, you must report the absence to our school. Please call the main office at 571-642-6000.

Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for resources on attendance

Quick highlights:

  • Rocket Day (Ask your student how it went) this week
  • AAP Information Night Meeting
  • Children's Science Night Upcoming

Helpful reminders:

  • Math homework is a practice tool for students to reinforce current content. If your child is struggling with their math homework, please get in touch with your teacher for support.
  • Twenty minutes of reading a night can improve your child's reading ability by more than a grade level by the end of the school year.

Uncovering Characters in Language Arts

Benchmark Unit 2 in Language Arts is coming to a close! Over the last several weeks, our students have learned, read, and written about different characters in stories and their own personal sense of character.

Connect with your child’s learning at school with these fun questions and hands-on activities at home:

  • Question: How does the way you act change the way you think about yourself?
  • Activity: Draw a new cover for a favorite book featuring the main character in a key moment.

At the end of the unit, your child will take home their unit magazine. The magazine includes an activity calendar with fun ways to help students build on what they’re learning at each grade level. You can also find information on how to support your child’s reading at home on the Benchmark Families website.

Take the K-12 School Start Times Survey

FCPS is continuing to explore options for adjusting school start times, with the primary goal of starting the middle school day at 8 a.m. or later. In order to minimize any cost for this project, elementary and high school start times would need to shift as well.

Providing feedback opportunities for the community is a critical part of this effort. Since 2024, FCPS’ consultant has hosted five community forums and administered two surveys. That feedback helped in developing two options for adjusting school start times. The options are designed to support student well-being, align with research, and balance transportation logistics.

We invite you to provide input on the two options by taking a short survey. This voluntary survey will close on Tuesday, September 30. Visit the FCPS website for more information on adjusting school start times.

SHOW UP AND SHINE!!!!

Attendance is a critical factor in academic achievement for all students. A student who has over 90% attendance in a school year is more likely to be at or above grade level and has a far greater chance of passing the Virginia SOLs in grades 3 - 12. Last year over 60% of all students at Lorton Station who failed the SOL were chronically absent either that year or the previous year. Attendance plays a major factor in student well-being and joy in school.

This year Lorton Station has launched our SHOW UP AND SHINE, Attendance Campaign to encourage all students at our school to maintain a 90% or above attendance record. Each month beginning in October to June, students who demonstrate a 90% attendance record will receive a reward that will be randomly selected and a bracelet that will allow them entrance into our TWO ATTEND- DANCES!!! at school.
