Message from Dr. Khoshaba

Greetings SoCo family,

October has officially arrived, bringing with it crisp mornings, colorful leaves, and the unmistakable feeling that fall is in full swing. As the saying goes, “October is a symphony of permanence and change,” reminding us that this season invites both reflection and renewal. At South County, we embrace this spirit by celebrating the progress we’ve made together while looking ahead to the exciting opportunities the new month holds.

Student and Staff Belonging

Student Voice, School Spirit

At our recent Faculty Meeting, senior Avery Bartee stepped up to the microphone with poise and confidence, delivering an engaging presentation about the upcoming Spirit Week events. Her leadership and courage in addressing a room full of staff was nothing short of inspiring—reminding us all that student voice is at the heart of our school community. Avery is like a lighthouse: steady, bright, and guiding others with clarity and confidence. Her example reminds us that when students lead, the entire school shines.

School Culture

Boardroom to Ballroom

This week, I had the pleasure of meeting with the Executive Board of Asian Night, and their energy and vision were truly inspiring. Together, we engaged in a thoughtful discussion about planning this highly anticipated event, which is scheduled for May 29 at 6:00 PM. With their creativity, collaboration, and commitment, it’s clear that Asian Night will be more than just a showcase—it will be a celebration of culture, talent, and community spirit.

Ringing in Responsibility

Our students have shown an outstanding response to the new cell phone policy and the weapons detection towers, demonstrating respect and responsibility school-wide. It’s clear that they’re taking these changes in stride and understanding the importance of keeping our school safe and focused. By following the guidelines, students are proving that they can be both connected and conscientious—truly “dialed in” to doing the right thing. Their cooperation makes South County a safer, more positive place for everyone.

Shining Stars of Character

This month, we are proud to recognize Danaya, Caitlin, and Laine as Core Values honorees, each demonstrating remarkable leadership, kindness, and dedication. Danaya’s commitment to learning serves as a beacon of hope for her Spanish classmates, inspiring those around her to give their best. Caitlin’s curiosity and love for French language and culture, paired with her supportive attitude, highlight the power of passion in the classroom. Laine’s selflessness and thoughtfulness—choosing to include others over herself—show what it truly means to be a light for others, embodying the very heart of our school’s Core Values.

Victory in Effort, Strength in Spirit

This past week, our field hockey teams showed true grit and dedication on the field. While our JV squad celebrated a hard-earned win, our varsity team faced a tough challenge with resilience and determination. Both teams displayed outstanding sportsmanship, supporting one another and representing our school with pride. Whether in triumph or in learning from a loss, their commitment to the game and to each other shines as a model for us all.

Leading with Heart

I am truly touched by our Leadership students’ thoughtful celebration of Principal Appreciation Week—it was a kind gesture that brightened my week. Your efforts remind me that leadership isn’t just about guiding others, but also about spreading kindness and joy along the way. You really topped the charts with your creativity and generosity! Thank you for making me feel appreciated in such a heartfelt and memorable way, with special recognition going out to Mobeena M, Olivia G, Halo D, and Emily C. for the door decorations.

Advising with Flair

This week, our Student Advisory Council tackled important topics like grades, stress, and uncovering hidden talents, showing that thoughtful conversation can spark big ideas. Their discussions weren’t just talk—they generated creative solutions to real challenges students face every day. It’s clear that when our students put their heads together, they can grade above and beyond expectations! We’re proud of their insight, collaboration, and inventive spirit.

Sweeping Us Off Our Feet

During Custodian Appreciation Week, we celebrated the hardworking individuals who keep our school shining and running smoothly every day. Their dedication often goes unnoticed, but their impact is felt in every clean hallway and well-maintained classroom. They truly mop up challenges with a smile, making our school a better place for students and staff alike. Thank you for your tireless effort and the pride you bring to every corner of South County!

Keep in Mind for Next Week

National Coaches Day – October 6 National Coaches Day on October 6 recognizes the coaches who guide, motivate, and inspire our student-athletes both on and off the field. Coaches play a vital role in building teamwork, resilience, and confidence in our students. Let’s show appreciation for their commitment and the positive influence they have in shaping the lives of young people.

Have Your Say: Help Shape Our School Day!

Parents, your voice matters! FCPS is exploring potential changes to school start times, and we want to hear from you. Please take a few minutes to complete the Start Time Survey by Monday, October 6. Share your thoughts here: https://www.fcps.edu/considering-change-k-12-school-start-times — your input will help guide important decisions for our students’ schedules and well-being.

Wednesday, October 8 (PSAT/SAT Day). All 10th and 11th graders will be taking the PSAT/SAT. Seniors have the option to participate, while all remaining seniors who do not test and all freshmen should remain home for the day. Please note, this will be an early release day at 12:55 PM. Make sure to get a good night’s rest and arrive on time if you are testing!

As we close this month’s newsletter, let’s take a moment to celebrate the resilience, dedication, and heart of our South County community. For the past 20 years, we’ve faced challenges, embraced growth, and supported one another with unwavering strength. Let’s continue to stand strong, lift each other up, and move forward with hope, knowing that together, there is nothing we cannot achieve. The best is yet to come!

And remember, we’re not just SoCo, we’re SoCool!

VOLUNTEER

Volunteer FCPS

New Volunteer Management System – Volunteer FCPS

FCPS has launched a new system to help ensure student and staff safety. Effective immediately:

  • If you plan to volunteer more than twice this school year, or chaperone a field trip, you must register in Volunteer FCPS.
  • The process involves multiple steps and cannot be completed last minute, so we encourage you to start early.

Volunteer Levels

  • Level 1 – Infrequent volunteers (monthly or less frequent) who are always supervised do not need a criminal background check. However, they do need a sex offender registry check, which is performed by signing in at the school's visitor kiosk.
  • Level 2 – Frequent, ongoing, or regular volunteers (daily, weekly, bi-weekly) who are also always supervised are subject to the same requirements as Level 1—no criminal background check, but a sex offender registry check via the kiosk is mandatory.
  • Level 3- Volunteers with direct, unsupervised interaction with students must complete a criminal background check, including fingerprints and child abuse and neglect checks. This applies to roles like mentors, tutors, or field trip chaperones who are alone with students (not accompanied by an FCPS staff member) at any time during the activity.

How to Register as a Volunteer:

  1. Review FCPS Volunteer Guidelines – All volunteers must read the FCPS Volunteer Protocols before getting started.
  2. Register in the FCPS Volunteer Portal
  • Select “Schools”
  • Search for South County High School or click here
  • Sign up for available opportunities (You can register as a general volunteer to start).
  • Choose Your Volunteer Level (NEW) – If you might volunteer at a higher level later, we recommend registering as Level 3 now.

All volunteers (new or returning) must:

  • Register in Volunteer FCPS
  • Complete volunteer orientation
  • Sign in through the visitor kiosk at each visit
  • Complete a background check if required
