Hello Braddock families,

I am reaching out with two time sensitive matters: Resources for families impacted by federal government shutdown and deadline (today Friday Oct 3rd) for the Student Leadership Development Program

Resources for Those Impacted by the Federal Government Shutdown

Like many of you, the federal government shutdown has personally impacted my family and is devastating for many families and staff in our community. I know we have so many dedicated public servants and military personnel who live and work in Fairfax County.

FCPS has many resources to support families who are impacted by the shut down. We know the stress of the shut down impacts children also, and our teachers and staff are ready to provide support to your student.

Please know that we are here to support you and your family if you are impacted by this shutdown. When families are under stress – including work stress – children feel it too, which is why we are committed to providing a safe and routine environment for each and every student. There are also resources available that can support your family during the shutdown – which we all hope will not last long. Here is some important information that you may find useful at this time:

  • Families can apply for free and reduced-price meal benefits anytime during the school year. If a family’s income changes at any point, they may become newly eligible according to federal income guidelines and can apply immediately. This includes income interruptions caused by furloughs, layoffs, or job losses.
  • Free, virtual mental health sessions are available through our partnership with Hazel Health.
  • The Fairfax County Government and various local organizations are offering assistance, including food, financial, and housing resources. For more information, visit the Fairfax County Human Services Resource Guide (HSRG) website.
  • Fairfax Connector’s Transit Ridership Incentive Program (TRIP) also provides 50% off fares for low-income residents ages 18 to 65. Learn more about the TRIP program and how to apply.
  • Fairfax County residents can take advantage of many of the free offerings the county provides to residents and students. Our incredible public libraries have a wide-selection of books and other activities that families can check out. All FCPS students also have a Library Equity Access Pass through Fairfax County Public Libraries, which allows them to check-out up to 3 items for 6 weeks. And Fairfax County’s many parks and recreation areas are open and free to residents as well.

Please know we are here to help you and your students through this difficult time.

Student Leadership Development Program Deadline is approaching!

The deadline for the Fairfax County School Board’s Student Leadership Development Program is TODAY 11:59 p.m. on Friday, October 3.

Any interested students MUST apply using the online application. Applications submitted outside of this online application will not be considered.

The School Board will notify students of their selection status by November 21, 2025. If you have any questions, please contact SBStudentLeadership@fcps.edu or 571-423-1075.

As always, if me or my office can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out, especially in this difficult time for our region.

With gratitude,
