Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson is back in theatres this weekend with
The Smashing Machine,
playing the role of a mixed martial arts fighter who struggles both in and outside the ring. Directed by Benny Safdie, the film is a loose remake of John Hyams’s 2002 documentary
The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr and here Johnson delivers a performance that feels new and unfamiliar – and might even earn him a spot in Academy Awards history.
