Open Gate Weapons Detection at GMS
We want to share an update regarding the weapons detection system that will be rolled-out to all middle schools this fall. This weapons detection system is the latest effort to strengthen our layered safety and security programs. It is similar to those used at sporting events and concerts for many years. Right now, the system is being rolled-out at all high schools, but middle schools will be implementing the system very soon.
Before Glasgow MS begins using the system in an official capacity, we plan to give students and staff a chance to test it out and see it in person. We have been practicing utilizing the Open Gate Weapons Detection Units with a few buses each morning and will expand the exposure to include the kiss/ride line very soon. This has allowed us to make small changes along the way so we can be most efficient when we start with all students. We will create Panther Time/Advisory lessons for our students to learn about the units and have an opportunity to practice before we go live. Details on when we will officially start using the system will be shared soon.
Earlier this year, several of our high school students joined Dr. Reid for a video discussion about school safety and to test out the new system. You can also learn more by reading the Frequently Asked Questions on our website or watching this explainer video. And if you have additional questions after reading the FAQs, you can submit them online to our Chief of Safety and Security Office.
FCPS is taking every precaution necessary to provide every student, including the students here at Glasgow MS a safe and secure learning environment. We want to acknowledge and thank our families, students, and staff for being flexible and embracing this new layer to our school’s overall safety.
Register for the World Languages Credit by Exam
This year's World Languages Credit by Exam will be administered at each FCPS middle, high, and secondary school.
The World Languages Credit by Exam is an optional test for students in grades 7-12 who can speak and write (type) proficiently in a language other than English. Based on the results of the exam, they can earn 1, 2, and/or 3 passing world language credits. If that language is one of the languages listed below, consider registering your student for the World Languages Credit by Exam! Reminder- 6th grade students are not able to take the exam until they are in 7th grade.
The 2025 World Languages Credit by Exam will be administered at Glasgow Middle School on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
Registration opens on Wednesday, September 2, at 8 a.m., and closes on Friday, October 17, at 4 p.m. Late registrations will not be accepted.
More information, including the list of languages offered on the exam, and how to register is available online.
Please contact your student’s school counselor to register for the exam.

Parents and caregivers can view important information in SIS ParentVUE such as student attendance, grades, progress reports, and assessment scores. Watch this video if you would like help creating a ParentVUE account.
You will keep the same ParentVUE account until your student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same account. An app is also available for Apple and Android devices.
If you already have an account, be sure to update your phone numbers and/or email addresses (in the Parent/Guardian section), so your child’s school can send you important information. Learn more about SIS ParentVUE
Student Attendance: In order for our students to get the most out of their education, they must be in school and on time to class every day. Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Students who miss 2-4 days in September are more likely to go on to miss nearly a month of school. If your student must be absent from school, please inform the school. The attendance phone number is 703-813-8787 or visit us at https://glasgowms.fcps.edu/about/attendance-reporting in our website.
In addition, parents will have the option to submit full-day absences through ParentVUE. Parent instructions are available on the Attendance page. The Parent Support Request page now includes under Application “SIS Parent” | Inquiry “Report Absences” option.
Cell phones and personal devices (AirPods, earbuds, headsets, or anything connected to the internet) must be off and away from the first bell to the last bell. Devices cannot be used during passing periods or as an instructional tool in class. If you need to contact your student during the school day, please call our front office at 703-813-8700. Learn more about FCPS’ cell phone policy, which helps students stay focused, safe, and engaged at school.

- The Fall Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3 through 12 in October.
Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.
After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families without a ParentVUE account. For more information including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit FCPS’ Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.

The Fairfax County Police Department shares these resources to help keep children safe online.
Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:
- Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
- Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
- Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
- Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
- A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
- Alcohol or drug use.
- Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
- Thoughts of harming themselves or others.
If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact your child's school counselor to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness.
If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.

Volunteering-Do you plan on chaperoning a field trip at GMS this year? See below!
-
Register for Volunteer FCPS At Glasgow MS, our volunteers are a vital part of our school community. We deeply value the time and care they give to our students. Recent updates to our volunteer process focus on one primary goal: keeping students safe.
These updates — such as checks against the sex offender registry and, in some cases, criminal background checks — are safety measures that will help us maintain a secure and supportive learning environment for every student in our care.
We encourage all our parents and community members interested in supporting our students by volunteering at school to visit [Volunteer FCPS], click “Learn More,” and then “Sign Up.” After you create a profile, you will view an orientation video and complete a volunteer application.
Volunteer FCPS ensures a safe, consistent, and welcoming environment at all of our schools. All volunteers must be registered in Volunteer FCPS. This includes individuals who volunteer to chaperone on field trips, work at book fairs, and help out regularly in classrooms, libraries, or cafeterias. Volunteers who work unsupervised with students will also be required to undergo a background check. We understand these changes may seem disruptive, especially for long-time volunteers. Our intent is to ensure that our students feel safe and supported with each and every person they encounter at school.
As a reminder, all volunteers — and visitors to a school — are required to sign in by scanning their ID at our visitor kiosk. Visit the Volunteer FCPS Frequently Asked Questions page to learn more.
