A trio of lingering areas of concern converged in the worst way for the Red Sox on Tuesday night, sapping the Fenway Park atmosphere of its energy and dooming them to a 2-1 defeat against the Athletics.
The bad loss — at a time of year when it feels even worse — exposed problems relating to the back end of the rotation, the middle of the bullpen, and the lineup, top-to-bottom.
“We lose that game because I can’t do my job,” said Greg Weissert, who allowed an inherited runner and one of his own to score in the game-swinging top of the sixth. “[Connelly] Early pitches an unbelievable game, and I go in there do that [expletive]. It sucks.”
With 11 games remaining, the Red Sox (82-69) have a 2½-game lead over the Guardians in the race for an AL wild-card berth.
