![]() Greetings! In the long-running battle over AI copyrights, it feels like this week the tide turned toward media — if only a little bit. On Thursday, Warners Bros. took arms alongside brethren Walt Disney Co and Universal and filed a copyright lawsuit against Midjourney over claims it lets people use AI to quickly generate artwork and images in the likeness of its characters like Bugs Bunny or Batman. On Friday, hot AI startup Anthropic agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle a lawsuit from a slew of authors who accused the company of illegally downloading and scraping their books to train its AI models. It's the biggest payout, to date, in a copyright case, according to plaintiffs' attorneys. Sounds like a big win right? It's significantly less substantial when you remember that Anthropic just raised $13 billion in its latest fundraising round, which puts the value of the company at an eye-watering $183 billion. Its estimated annualized revenue was $5 billion as of July, with projections to reach $9 billion by the end of the year. So while that settlement may sting, it's not lethal to Anthropic.
