U.S. job growth slowed significantly in August, a sign the labor market is under increasing stress. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the U.S. added 22,000 jobs in August, well below expectations for 75,000. The unemployment rate ticked higher to 4.3%, in line with expectations. This is the first monthly jobs report since President Donald Trump fired the agency’s head, Erika McEntarfer, over accusations of releasing inaccurate data after last month’s numbers showed greater weakness than feared. |
