Vale Sir Eric Neal: Former governor of South Australia Eric Neal (pictured) died on Tuesday, aged 101. He served as governor from 1996 to 2001, after a career in business in Australia and overseas. Sir Eric was chancellor of Flinders University for nearly a decade and volunteered in public service areas such as sport, the arts, and military history. He was knighted in 1982, and he was awarded three honorary doctorates. Sir Eric lived and worked in Broken Hill for 10 years as a works engineer at the Broken Hill Gas Co. He leaves two sons, five grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Woman defrauded a family member: A Broken Hill woman has been sentenced to a nine-month community corrections order for defrauding a family member. Shannen Lee Hanns appeared in the Broken Hill Local Court on August 29 where she was convicted for dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception. The magistrate sentenced the 31-year-old to a nine-month term of imprisonment to be served by way of intensive correction in the community, expiring on May 28 next year. During this period, Hanns must report to supervision under Broken Hill Community Corrections, perform 100 hours of community service and abstain from drugs. She has also been ordered to pay $62,096 in compensation to Jodie Hanns, understood to be a relative.
More asbestos found: The New South Wales Department of Education has delayed the demolition of Willyama High School after finding more asbestos. Extensive mould was found in the high school in January 2024, leading to a decision to demolish the school. More than 600 students had to be relocated, with both of the city's high schools now sharing a campus.
