Two people are dead and six others are suffering from various injuries after a stabbing incident in Hollow Water First Nation, a small Manitoba community on the eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg.

Manitoba RCMP said the suspect, without providing any identifying details, was also killed in the mass casualty event early Thursday. Police are now investigating what exactly happened.

On Thursday, multiple patients with varying degrees of injuries began to arrive by air and by road to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, according to Shared Health, the province’s central health care agency.

The emergency situation had led the province’s largest hospital to declare a code orange, which is called when staff need to prepare for a mass casualty event. Shared Health said the code has now been called off as of 10:51 a.m.
