Chicago Tribune Opinion

Thursday, September 4, 2025

Good morning.

We have an op-ed today that especially intrigued me. We've heard a lot this year about the housing crisis, the so-called abundance agenda and YIMBYs. Longtime Old Town resident Corinne Svoboda has a take on the YIMBY (“yes in my backyard”) movement that isn't so positive. She notes the large number of YIMBY enthusiasts who publicly supported a proposed new luxury high-rise in Old Town despite the fact they live elsewhere. She says they are unwittingly becoming "foot soldiers" for developers who care much more about profit than solving the housing shortage. Thought-provoking.

Elsewhere, the editorial board considers a component of our public education woes that doesn't get enough attention: Too many kids aren't in class often enough.

And a second editorial lauds the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling upholding Illinois' sensible prohibition on the concealed carrying of weapons on trains and buses.

Tio Hardiman of "Violence Interrupters" fame has an op-ed encouraging Gov. JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson to work with President Donald Trump on Chicago's violent crime struggles.

And a University of Chicago economist writes on the problem of China's dominance in pharmaceutical manufacturing and how the U.S. should go about reducing its dependence on our adversary.

We've got some particularly thoughtful letters from readers as well, including one taking issue with the edit board's stance earlier this week on Pritzker, Johnson and Trump.

Hope your day is grand, and we'll be back tomorrow.

— Steve Daniels, editorial board member
