The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to quickly decide whether it has the power to impose broad tariffs under a law designed for use during times of emergency. The Justice Department is appealing a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Friday that said Trump had exceeded his authority, the filings said.

The appeals court said the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which allows the president to regulate imports when there is a national emergency, does not give sweeping powers to impose global tariffs of unspecified duration. (
