There’s no evidence that Garrett Crochet has hit a wall — not when he’s still hurling 99-mile-per-hour comets and getting batters to chase nasty offerings outside of the strike zone. But it’s certainly fair to wonder if he’s offering warning signs against the backdrop of a workload unlike any he’s ever shouldered.
On Tuesday night, Crochet turned in his worst start as a member of the Red Sox. Though the Sox offense bailed him out in an eventual 11-7 victory over the Guardians, Crochet was left to puzzle over a start that had been solid before unraveling rapidly.
Through five innings, the lefthander allowed just two hits and one run. The Sox led, 5-1, and appeared to be cruising. And then, a black hole.
In the sixth inning, Cleveland clubbed Crochet for six runs on six hits, including three homers. Not only did the Guardians take a 7-5 lead, but Crochet walked off the field having matched career-worsts in homers (four), runs (seven), and hits (seven) allowed in a single outing. His ERA jumped from 2.40 to 2.67.
