The Dunne Dispatch - 07/18/2025
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Supervisor Dan Storck and I are teaming up with Educate Fairfax to provide new school supplies for students attending schools in the Mount Vernon District. These supplies and new backpacks will be distributed at our annual Mount Vernon District Back to School Event on Saturday, August 2 at the Lorton Community Action Center.
Last year, we gave away 700 backpacks and more than 2,400 people attended! We hope to provide 1,000 backpacks this year–but we need your help.
-
Click here to donate to this effort now! A $15 donation buys a full set of school supplies. A $25 donation includes a backpack.
-
Drop off your donations of school supplies on Saturday, July 19, 10 AM - 4 PM at Walmart (7910 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria, VA - near Costco). Hope we can count on your support!

Join a School Board Community Advisory Committee!
The Mount Vernon District currently has three (3) vacant positions on a few School Board Community Advisory Committees. Through these committees, residents provide input to our Board on a variety of important issues.
We have openings on three committees for the 2025-26 school year that I must fill (APPLY HERE by the Friday, August 1 at 5:00 p.m.):
-
Advanced Academic Programs Advisory Committee (AAPAC): Reviews the local plan for the education of gifted students, including revisions, and determines the extent to which the plan for the previous year was implemented. Meets monthly, 1-Year Term.
-
Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC): Advocates for minority student achievement by identifying, reviewing, and assessing issues affecting minority student academic achievement. Meets monthly, 1-Year Term.
-
School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC): Assists with the development of health policy and the evaluation of the status of school health, health education, the school environment, and health services. Meets monthly, 1-Year Term.
Applicants must live in the Mount Vernon Magisterial District. Use this district look-up tool to confirm your residency. Please help spread the word about these exciting volunteer opportunities.
Very respectfully,
Mateo Dunne, Mount Vernon District Representative
