David Cronenberg lost his wife, film editor Carolyn Zeifman, in 2017. But even if you weren’t aware of that going into his latest feature The Shrouds, which is streaming on Criterion or available on-demand, you’d be able to tell that this is a deeply personal project. It’s very Cronenberg-y: Vincent Cassel plays a widowed businessman who’s created a state of the art cemetery that allows people to stay connected to their deceased loved ones via a livestream of their decomposing corpse. Someone vandalizes the cemetery and hacks the system, and Cronenberg goes on a journey that’s twisted, mysterious, erotic, and poetic. It’s not my favorite of his films that I’ve seen thus far (Videodrome!) but its interrogation of technology and grief feels very of this moment, and I’ll always be here for late-period filmmakers who still seem invigorated by their work, and a need to express themselves through it.
Look, I’m not saying anything new or original here, but Audra McDonald is fantastic in Gypsy on Broadway. Dynamic. Stunning. A force. I recently got the chance to see her and I’m so glad I did — aside from McDonald, the entire ensemble wows (especially Joy Woods as Louise), and George C. Wolfe’s production and Camille A. Brown’s choreography really breathe new life into the show. But the special thing about live theater is that it is ephemeral, and this week we learned that the show will be closing sooner than anticipated — August 17, in fact. (The New York Times’ Michael Paulson reports that a big reason is the high cost of production.) So, if you haven’t already and you can swing it, I highly suggest making Gypsy a priority.
A couple years ago, I was obsessed with The Knocks’ remix of Dragonette’s uber-catchy “Twennies.” (Still am, to be perfectly honest.) Now the electro duo and the singer-songwriter have gone all-in together on a full album, Revelation, and it’s packed with pop-dance confections I haven’t been able to stop listening to. The Carly Rae EMOTION-era vibes are strong with this one, especially on a banger like “Dreams,” which is exactly the kind of song you want blaring out of your speakers during, say, a road trip with friends or at a nighttime beach party bonfire. |
