Connect with Colleagues Outside of Work—the Right Way

Building stronger relationships with coworkers beyond the office can boost trust and improve performance—but only when done carefully. The key isn’t whether to connect outside of work, but where. Choose settings with these four traits to build genuine connection while lowering the risk of too much boundary-blurring.

Make it flexible. Opt for spaces that accommodate different needs, schedules, and comfort levels. Whether virtual or in person, settings that offer multiple ways to engage reduce pressure and increase accessibility.

Ensure it’s legitimate. Pick environments others will recognize as appropriate and inclusive. Socially accepted spaces—like interest-based clubs or community events—signal that your intent is professional, not performative.

Keep it virtuous. Choose settings associated with positive values, such as health, learning, or service. These contexts provide a safe backdrop for connection and show shared priorities beyond the workplace.

Invite playfulness. Fun, low-stakes environments help people let their guard down. When colleagues can be themselves—and when they can laugh, experiment, and move—their interactions feel more authentic and humanizing.
