The chances of encountering bedbugs in any given hotel room aren’t high … but they’re not zero, either. That being said, you don’t have to let bedbugs, or the fear of them, ruin your travel plans. There are some very simple steps you can take to prevent unwanted hitchhikers — including what to do before you unpack your bags, the red flags to look out for on hotel sheets, and how to protect your luggage.

For a recent edition of our weekly gifting newsletter, The Gift, newsletters editor Brittney Ho rounded up the best things Wirecutter journalists have ever toted back home from trips. “Done right, a souvenir from a trip is neither an obligation nor is it a flex,” Brittney writes. “It’s a way to share and extend the privilege of travel long after you’ve come home. It’s a gift that shows someone else that while you were out enjoying the world in all its jaw-dropping glory, at least a small part of you was thinking, ‘You know who’d love this? So-and-so.’”
