We’re halfway through Prime Day, Amazon’s (now four day-long) made-up shopping holiday. And while most deals stink, we’ve found some actually great ones. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Prime Day is a good time to stock up on (admittedly less sexy) cheap everyday essentials like cleaning supplies. Tried-and-true basics that you know you’ll use every day are a worthwhile thing to snag at a price our experts have rigorously vetted as a true deal — not a shady markdown. We asked cleaning expert Caroline Mullen to dish on the on-sale cleaning supplies she wouldn’t pass up today. Let’s zhuzh the place up, shall we? SEE THE DEALS 29 great deals on cleaning and organizing supplies→ The best dishwasher detergent pods: Caroline has tried countless dishwasher detergents for testing, but she’s loyal to Wirecutter’s top-pick pods, which she buys in bulk. “They blast through even the most egregious peanut butter spoons or baked-on scrambled egg on the first shot, which is worth the price, because who has the time to run the dishwasher again?”
A handy, portable purifier: Caroline currently keeps a purifier running on low at all times in her living room to filter out dust and pet dander. But for her small-ish bedroom, she’s eyeing a more petite purifier. We like how this one — which was an excellent performer in our testing — can sit comfortably on a desk or table without crowding the space.
The best portable carpet and upholstery cleaner: This pint-sized, powerful cleaner was indispensable for spot-cleaning rugs, couches, and chairs when Caroline’s dog was a puppy, and she has found it extremely useful since then, too: “wine spills while entertaining, ice pop drips on the carpet (it’s summer, baby!), and periodic deep cleans of dining chair seats.” Plus, the machine itself is lightweight, so it’s easy to store away and schlep out when needed.
Strong magnetic spice shelves: “If you’re not utilizing the sides of your fridge as organizational space, you’re missing out on some prime real estate,” advises Caroline, who keeps a sturdy rack on her fridge stuffed to the gills with oils, salt, pepper, and paper towels. If you have an overflowing spice cabinet or drawer, these magnetic racks make clever use of this often-forgotten space.
A rack to tame Tupperware lids: Caroline recently got married, and thanks to some registry wins, she has been forced to do a bit of kitchen reorganization. “A storage lid organizer is just one of the solutions I’m eyeing to hone the flow of my little kitchen (and limit the number of curses uttered when reaching into the cabinet for a leftovers container).”

Oswald, Caroline’s 4-year-old French bulldog, is somewhat of a menace. (“He’s stinky. It’s not his fault, he’s just a boy!” she says.) Happily, this also makes him an important source for Caroline in her job testing cleaning supplies for Wirecutter.
