With Roman Anthony emerging as a lineup mainstay, the team has shoehorned Anthony, Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, and Ceddanne Rafaela into the lineup by using Anthony as a frequent DH option against righties. (Rob Refsnyder has and will continue to be a constant against lefties, with the team alternately sitting Duran and Abreu against southpaws.)
But with Masataka Yoshida expected to return as the team’s primary DH against righties on Wednesday, the Red Sox face an even narrower squeeze for playing time, with one lefthanded hitter likely to sit against righties.
Do the Sox need to trade from a position of depth in order to manage playing time? Not necessarily. But they also can’t ignore the fact that, in a scenario where one of those five outfield/DH options sits in any game against a righty, the team will be realizing something less than a player’s full impact.
