◆ Expo 2025, Osaka, Kansai, Japan: The Charm of Kansai◆
Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan is now underway with the theme of Designing Future Society for Our Lives. At the Expo, many people and innovations from
around the world come together, in an effort to address issues facing
humankind on a global scale. Many people from Japan and overseas are
visiting the Expo, with great excitement on display every day. In this issue of
HIGHLIGHTING Japan, we feature an interview with ISHIGE Hiroyuki,
Secretary General, Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition, about the significance of hosting this Expo, and introduce the famous areas that
comprise the main motifs of the Domestic Pavilions that are centered on Osaka and the Kansai region. This issue also includes a column introducing the official character of the Expo in simple English.

Largest Freshwater Lake
(Introducing Lake Biwa, the theme of the Shiga Prefecture Booth and
Japan’s largest and oldest freshwater lake, at 4 million years. The lake
supports the lives of people in the Kansai region by providing municipal,
industrial, and agricultural water supplies)
●The Picturesque Wakanoura, Celebrated in Many Traditional Waka Poems
(Introducing Wakanoura in Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture, part of
the Wakayama Prefecture Zone, a scenic spot that has fascinated people
since ancient times and appears as a motif in waka poems, stories and
paintings.)
●Tottori Sand Dunes: Shaped by Timeless Forces of Nature
(Introducing the Tottori Sand Dunes in Tottori Prefecture, one of Japan’s
largest sand formations, which took over 100,000 years to form and are
reproduced in the Tottori Prefecture Zone)
●‘Uzu no Michi’ Offering Close-Up Views of the Naruto Strait’s Whirlpools
(Introducing the Naruto Whirlpools, a natural phenomenon that can be seen
in the Naruto Strait between Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, and Awaji
Island, Hyogo Prefecture, where powerful tidal currents swirl into whirlpool
patterns on the sea surface. It can be enjoyed virtually in the Tokushima
Prefecture Zone.)
