Abha Narain Lambah is one of the few conservation architects working in India, and she has dedicated her career to preserving the rich architectural heritage of Mumbai amid the city’s rapid building boom. Her historic preservation work includes local landmarks like the Royal Opera House, the Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue and the former Tata Palace. Lambah’s latest undertaking: restoring the Gateway of India, a monumental arch completed in 1924 that’s deteriorating due to years of water-related damage.

But to Lambah, this isn’t just a “beautification job,” she tells reporter Malavika Kaur Makol. Lambah’s approach extends beyond simple restoration by engaging local communities in the process. Today on CityLab: One Architect’s Quest to Save Mumbai’s Heritage From Disappearing
