It was a cool April night in Maine, on the eve of Easter. My extended family had journeyed north to Mom’s house near Moosehead Lake to celebrate together. After greeting everyone in the house, I had snuck outside for some deep breaths.
The cold, fresh air helped for a moment. But then, despite the din inside and the traffic nearby, I heard a quiet meow. I looked around and called, but no felines came running. Eventually, I went back inside. Tiger, the orange Hemingway tabby, and fluffy gray Charlie were there, but I couldn’t find the dark calico named Chocolate. This wasn’t unusual, though, since she was the most skittish and independent of the bunch.
