Celebrating Academic Growth!
We are thrilled to share an update on our students' academic performance, highlighting their incredible growth and success in the recent SOL tests and early literacy and math screeners. Our students continue to demonstrate impressive progress, a testament to their hard work and the dedication of our teachers and staff.
Overall SOL Pass Rates on the Rise! We're seeing significant improvements in our overall pass rates for the SOL exams.

Reading SOL: Our pass rate increased from 86% in 2024 to a fantastic 89% in 2025!

Math SOL: Students achieved an impressive 91% pass rate in 2025, up from 87% in 2024.

Science SOL: Our pass rate rose from 85% in 2024 to 87% in 2025.
Strong Performance Across Grade Levels (Preliminary SOL Pass Rates) Our preliminary data for individual grade levels also shows excellent results in Reading and Math.

Third Grade: 84% in Reading and 88% in Math.

Fourth Grade: Students excelled with 93% in both Reading and Math.

Fifth Grade: Strong performance with 88% in Reading and 91% in Math.

Sixth Grade: Impressive results with 91% in both Reading and Math (including 5th-grade advanced).

Advanced Math Sixth Grade: Achieved a perfect 100% on Math 7 SOL!
Early Literacy and Math Screener Success! Our early elementary students are also demonstrating strong foundational skills.

K-3 Reading Screener: The percentage of students meeting screener expectations in VALLSS/iReady increased from 86% to 90%.

K-6 Math Screener: We saw an increase from 76% to 84% of students meeting the Spring math screener benchmark.
We are incredibly proud of our students' achievements and will continue to work diligently to support their academic journey. Thank you for your continued partnership in their education!
If we do not receive your child's band/strings selection, they will have a double general music class.
Band & Strings: In grades 4 – 6, students have the opportunity to start/continue an instrument. Fourth graders can choose strings, Fifth and Sixth graders can choose band OR strings. Students will receive one band/strings class a week. Students will not miss any other instruction.

Chorus: We invite students to join the 5th and 6th Grade chorus program at WSES! Chorus is open to all 5th and 6th grade students at WSES and no choral experience is required. Students have the option to participate in chorus while also playing an instrument in either band OR strings. All students had the opportunity to hear the choir perform in our in-school assembly. If your 5th and 6th Grader is interested in joining choir for the 2025-26 school year, please sign up here.

Last Day of School Dismissal We will dismiss 2 hours early at 1:30 on the last day of school, Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
Library Book Returns - Due! This is a friendly reminder that all school library books are due back before the end of the school year. I'll be giving the homeroom teachers the last set of overdue notices to place in Thursday folders today. Please help them locate any overdue books your child may have. If you've lost a book, you can pay for it easily through MySchoolBucks. The deadline to return books or pay for lost items is June 20th.

LOST and FOUND There are quite a few missing items in our lost and found. We will have them outside the school from Tuesday, June 10 - Friday, June 13 for parents to view and claim their child’s missing items before they get donated to a local charity.

Student Testing Results Coming Soon Throughout May and June, you will receive your child’s spring assessment results. If you aren’t sure what assessments your child took this year, there is a list of tests by grade level on the FCPS website.
How the results are delivered depends on the test. Scores will be delivered in SIS ParentVUE or from the school or testing organization. Learn what to expect regarding assessment reporting practices and timelines.
Visit FCPS’ website for additional information about how test results are reported to families. Individual test websites provide report translations and help for interpreting test results. Please contact us with any testing questions or for additional information about how we use test results to support student success.
Limited Early Release Days Continue Next Year During a report to the School Board this month, FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid announced plans to continue limited early release days in elementary schools and shift them to Wednesdays for the 2025-26 school year.

End of School Year MEDICATION PICK UP REMINDER Please plan accordingly to pick up your student’s medications! All medication must be collected on June 11, 2025 no later than 1:25 pm, any medications left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.
If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s). If you have any questions, please reach out to your Public Health Nurse, Maricel Villarivera, at 703-912-4410.

Your Child's Mental Wellness Matters: Access Comprehensive Services Reach out to the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB) for specialized youth mental health services designed to help your child succeed. The CSB has individual and family counseling, psychiatric diagnostic evaluations, medication management, parenting groups, peer support, crisis response, recovery supports that include medication-assisted treatment (MAT), intensive services, and other options.
Immunization Resources The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer a series of back-to-school immunization clinics in August 2025 for all FCPS students. Appointments are required. Registration for the WSHS 5th annual Spartan Football Youth Camp is now OPEN This camp is open to all rising 3rd through rising 9th graders.
