For the second straight night, reliever Justin Slaten took the mound with electricity pouring from his hand. His fastballs blazed across the plate at 98 m.p.h., comets that left Blue Jays hitters flailing defensively.
And yet for the second straight night, Slaten could not turn outrageous stuff into matching results. Entrusted with a one-run lead in the eighth inning Thursday, Slaten yielded three consecutive two-strike hits on breaking balls, punctuated by Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s three-run rocket into the left-field seats and a 4-2 loss by the Red Sox.
It marked the second straight night the Sox blew a late-innings lead and lost. They have blown seven saves, most in the American League.
